stat480
Offered Spring 2007.
Student comments:
- This course: how to look at real data using tools are actually used by statisticians and in industry.
- This course taught me scepticism more than anything else. You will learn how to be curious about data and dig deeper and deeper to find interesting patterns and relationships, rather than accepting what you see from the initial analysis.
- This course teaches you the importance of cleaning data with Excel, R and SAS.
- "A good understanding of all types of tools and software is extremely important to being efficient and thorough when looking at data sets and that is what this class helps you to achieve."
Advice from past students
- Work on difficult concepts out of class: if you don't understand something in class, go home and play around with it until you have a better understanding
- Pay attention in class! And put effort into the homework - they're the only grades you get
- Don't be afraid to ask questions
- Follow along with all the code in class, then save yourself a copy of all the code used in class - especially if it isn't on the slides!
- Pay attention at all times in class. It's so convenient to check email or what not rather than listen, but you learn 100x more when you listen.
